Classes

 

The Yarn Gallery offers a variety of classes in knitting, crochet, spinning, and felting for beginners to intermediate and for those looking to learn more advanced techniques.   We want you to get the most out of your class experience and so we have rated each of our classes based on the skills required.  Please see the skill level definitions at the bottom of the page.

 

Registration

We have teamed up with Itasca Community Education for our Winter/Spring classes. Please register online at  www.getlearning.org or by calling 218-327-5730.  

 

Class Policies

  • No refunds or credit unless you cancel at least 24 hours before the start of the class.
  • Materials are not included in the class price unless otherwise specified. 
  • Materials must be purchased at The Yarn Gallery. 
  • If The Yarn Gallery cancels a class the class fees will be fully refunded in the form of original payment.

Twining & Braiding with Tree Bark

Description: Join artist and retired forester John Zasada as he teaches how to create yarn and twine using tree bark!  Step by step he will show you how to take the raw bark and turn it into yarn.  Use this handmade yarn to knit and crochet baskets, placemats, or straw hats!

Fair Isle Vest

Class Description:  Join us as we knit the Old & New Fair Isle vest by Elizabeth Lovick. This vest is knit in the round, features several warm and witty motifs, and will teach you all the skills required for Fair Isle - including steeking!!

Hats 101

Description:  Learn knitting in the round and working with double pointed needles as you create a classic hat.  This 2 hour class will give you the skills needed for circular knitting!

Knitting 101

Description:  This 2 hour class will teach you the basics of knitting and provide you with a neck warming accessory.  You will learn to cast on, the knit stitch and binding off as you create your own scarf.

Skill Level: Beginner

Crochet 101

Description:  This class will teach you the basics of crochet.  In this 2 hour course you will learn the basic stitches...chain, single crochet and double crochet.  We will be creating a washcloth.

Illusion Knitting

Description:  In this class you will create a scarf that is an optical illusion. From the front it looks like an ordinary striped scarf but from an angle it’s a piano!!  All you need to know to learn this technique is how to knit and purl, we’ll teach you the rest. See the sample at TYG – you won’t believe your eyes!

Socks 101

Description: This class will give you all the skills required in basic sock construction.  In this 3 hour session you will make an entire sock that will take you through all the techniques involved in creating your own socks; from casting on, heel flap, heel turn, gusset, foot, and toe shaping!

Top Down Cardigan

Description:  Ready to knit your first sweater?  This 3 session class will take you through the techniques involved in knitting your own top down raglan sweater.  This stylish cardigan will become a regular part of your wardrobe and one you will be proud to wear!

Baby Papoose

Description:  Having a baby?  Need a useful unique baby gift or just like to knit something to put away for that special someone?  This baby papoose is a winner with everyone!  Knitted in the round using either a basket weave or mock cable stitch.

Crochet Sweater

Description: This crocheted Cameron sweater by Tracy St. John is stylish and functional.  It’s perfect layered over a tee with jeans for a crisp cool day; or wear it dressed up to take the chill away at night. The nearly seamless, top-down construction makes it easy to fit; make one to perfectly fit your own best friend, and another for yourself.

Honey Cowl

Description: Time to revamp your accessories and get some Spring colors into your wardrobe!  Knit this fun Honey Cowl in the round.  It looks so intricate finished…but is so easy to knit!

Speed Knitting

Description: Want to speed up your knitting time? Do you like to try new techniques for knitting and purling? Come to this hands-on session to learn how to do the Continental method of knitting. Eliminate throwing and increase your speed.

Materials: Circular needle (24") in size 7, 8 or 9, 1 skein worsted weight yarn, and basic knowledge of casting on and knitting

Family Felted Easter Eggs

Description:  This parent/child class will have you creating your own Easter eggs using wool roving.  These bright and fun eggs can be used year after year.  Each child should be accompanied by an adult.

Hand Dyeing Yarn Workshop

Description: Create your own hand dyed yarn! This all day workshop will introduce you to hand dyeing. All supplies are included in the class fee.  Please dress for mess!

Spinning Workshop

Description: This 4 session class is designed for beginner spinners or for those who want an in-depth refresher in spinning. This class has an emphasis on developing spinning techniques and increasing skills with a variety of fibers.  Each session will present progressively more advanced spinning skills.  Time will be allowed for hands-on experience with every technique and method.  Come ready to work and learn. 

Please bring your spinning wheel to the first session. If you do not currently own a wheel, spinning wheels are available for use at The Yarn Gallery.  These wheels are limited so when you register for the class please indicate that you will need a wheel to use. Registration is required in advance and space is limited.

Materials:  Fiber for the class is included in the class fee and will be provided at each session.

Spring Crochet Cardigan

Description:  This Spring cardigan is perfect for all types of weather.  Made using a circle technique the entire sweater is created in one piece.  Choose any yarn and hook combination to get the look you desire from lacy to warm and cozy!

Two at a Time Socks

Description:  Second sock syndrome is a thing of the past when you learn now to knit two socks at a time! This advanced class will teach you how to complete a pair of socks, knitting both at the same time on one circular needle. You’ll learn the anatomy of a sock as you knit, and learn how to make a reinforce heel, turn a heel using short rows, pick up gusset stitches, and graft a toe shut.

Finishing School

Class Description: Have some projects that you need to finish, block, seam, or create edging for?  This class will help you with all those tricky finishing techniques that keep you from showing off your handmade items.

Knitter’s Choice

This is an ongoing class; jump in whenever you want! Knitter’s Choice is just that - YOUR choice: you pick the project, we provide the support. Even if you’ve never knit before, we can teach you! Mittens? Socks? Lace? A sweater? Knit what YOU want, but if you get stuck, don't worry, we can guide you along the way. This is a great option if you want to take a class with a friend, but you knit at different levels. Come to just one class or come every week – knitter’s choice.

Skill Level:  All are welcome!
